As we move from 2020 into 2021, I wanted to share my thoughts on the significance of the transition between years. We can joke all we want about the arbitrary decision on when one year changes to the next, and about the generic resolutions that seem to constantly crop up each year and then get dropped a week (or a month) later without another thought, yet we still hold New Year’s Day as a significant time of change and renewal despite this.
When the calendar flips from December to January, I believe we truly should take a moment to step back and reflect. Reflect on the goodness of God and His care for us even in the midst of the trials. Of how much He loves us despite our best efforts to make things go awry. Of how our situations often seem out of control, only for Him to show up and reveal His plan. Year by year, God can remind us that He does not change, that Christ died for us and rose again to conquer death and sin. And if our situation is still not perfect? “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6, ESV)
Go forth into this new year of 2021 reflecting on what came before, and wait in patient expectation for the new things Christ will do in your life this year. Do not fear the trial, but stand tall in Him and know you are loved.
